I Understand Better in English explores how language, perception, and position shape the experience of becoming an “other.” The work focuses on the subtle negotiations through which daily life becomes legible across places, languages, and expectations. Moving between Mandarin, English, and a third linguistic space, language becomes both connection and friction. Misreadings, projection, and power enter acts of communication, while meaning remains unstable and continually negotiated. Rather than resolving this in-between condition, the work stays with it, holding the self as something soft, shifting, and never fully fixed.
